Novel H1N1 pandemic: when pigs fly.

چکیده

On April 21, 2009, the "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" Dispatch was entitled "Swine Influenza A (H1N1) Infection in 2 Children-Southern California, March to April 2009".[1,2] This marked the beginning of a long awaited influenza pandemic. Within days, there were reports of widespread influenza with high mortality in young adults in Mexico. These cases were subsequently confirmed to be due to a novel strain. The viral genome is part swine, part avian, and part human influenza; thus, it is truly novel.[3] Following the initial 2 cases in California, there were dozens and then hundreds of cases throughout the United States and across the Northern hemisphere.

Rapid detection of reassortment of pandemic H1N1/2009 influenza virus.

BACKGROUND Influenza viruses can generate novel reassortants in coinfected cells. The global circulation and occasional introductions of pandemic H1N1/2009 virus in humans and in pigs, respectively, may allow this virus to reassort with other influenza viruses. These possible reassortment events might alter virulence and/or transmissibility of the new reassortants. Investigations to detect such...

Absence of 2009 Pandemic H1N1 Influenza A Virus in Fresh Pork

The emergence of the pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus in humans and subsequent discovery that it was of swine influenza virus lineages raised concern over the safety of pork. Pigs experimentally infected with pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus developed respiratory disease; however, there was no evidence for systemic disease to suggest that pork from pigs infected with H1N1 influenza woul...

Transmission of pandemic H1N1 influenza virus and impact of prior exposure to seasonal strains or interferon treatment.

Novel swine-origin influenza viruses of the H1N1 subtype were first detected in humans in April 2009. As of 12 August 2009, 180,000 cases had been reported globally. Despite the fact that they are of the same antigenic subtype as seasonal influenza viruses circulating in humans since 1977, these viruses continue to spread and have caused the first influenza pandemic since 1968. Here we show tha...

Serologic Cross-Reactivity with Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Virus in Pigs, Europe

We tested serum samples from pigs infected or vaccinated with European swine influenza viruses (SIVs) in hemagglutination-inhibition assays against pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus and related North American SIVs. We found more serologic cross-reaction than expected. Data suggest pigs in Europe may have partial immunity to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.

Reassortant Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Virus in Pigs, United Kingdom

Surveillance for influenza virus in pigs in the United Kingdom during spring 2010 detected a novel reassortant influenza virus. This virus had genes encoding internal proteins from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus and hemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes from swine influenza virus (H1N2). Our results demonstrate processes contributing to influenza virus heterogeneity.
